Frequently asked questions

How do I know the amount of laps for each round?

A few days before the event apps like Roxfit publish the amount of laps for each of the eight runs. Plug these numbers in above.

How do I use this data in my race?

I usually start tracking when I have a fixed point on the race track. For this I like to use the OUT arch. When I run through the OUT arch (and therefore my next run starts), I start the lap timer on my watch. When I pass the OUT arch again, I check my pace to see if I’m on track. That is what I do and I’m sure there are better approaches. Let me know in the comments!

How do I keep track of my pace during the race?

By writing the following times on the arm or hand, where you also wear your smartwatch, way you can easily compare your watch and your target lap time. Take a sharpie and best write down:

You’ll be busy enough with racing at the limit of your physical abilities, you don’t want to start calculating and thinking about your times. So write it down.

Should I not just run as fast as possible?

Hyrox is a sport where you combine cardio and muscular fatigue. You’re running 8 × 1 km as fast as possible, but still want a high quality throughout the 8 stations. If you run the kilometer too hard, you arrive at the station already “in the red zone” and your first minute becomes recovery instead of work at the station. A consistent run pace helps you start stations immediately.

A steady pace makes sure you can work continuously, not in bursts interrupted by a forced recovery, because your legs feel “blocked” and you need to catch up with your breathing.

Because of heat, dehydration and fatigue your heart rate tends to creep up over time even if you’re running at the same pace. If you start too fast, you will hit that drift earlier and end up in survival mode for the last third of your race. This is why knowing and keeping a consistent pace can help you perform the best at your next race.

Can’t I use GPS from my watch?

Your GPS will be inaccurate and often Hyrox events are indoors, so the signal will be patchy. So you can’t rely on the GPS signal and the pace your watch is telling you.
